Parents & first-timers
What to expect at your first class
Everything parents ask before they sign up — answered straight, with no fine print.
What ages can start?
Our youngest students join Little Lions at ages 3–5, with a parent-friendly class built around listening, following directions and having fun. From there we have classes for kids 5–12, teens, adults and homeschool groups — so everyone in the family can train.
Is there a long-term contract?
Your first class is free with no obligation to join, and you are never locked into a long-term contract.
What should my child wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in — shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt are perfect for the first class. No uniform needed the first time (we give every new student a FREE uniform). Bare feet on the mat; please leave shoes at the edge.
Can parents watch?
Absolutely — you're welcome to watch any class from the side. Many parents stay and get to know the other families. You're never asked to leave your child and come back later.
Is it safe?
Yes. Students train at their own pace and are never pushed beyond their ability. Sparring (when students are ready) uses required protective gear — headgear, pads and mouth guards — and beginners focus on fundamentals before any contact.
What's the difference between Taekwondo, Kobudo and Aiki Jutsu?
Taekwondo is the way of hand and foot — kicks, hand strikes, blocks, take-downs and joint locks, with belts from white through black. Kobudo is weapons training — bo, nunchaku, sai, tonfa, kama and sword, starting at green belt. Aiki Jutsu uses the attacker's momentum against them: circular redirection into joint locks, throws, pins and chokes. Most students start in Taekwondo and add weapons and Aiki Jutsu as they progress. See Our Three Styles for more.
How do belts and testing work?
Belts are earned, not given — students test as they're ready, and practice videos are on hand for every form. Colored-belt tests are $35 (includes belt and certificate); advanced ranks (Deputy Black / Red Tip / Ikkyu) are $50, and black-belt tests in front of the judges panel are $150. The exact requirements for every rank are on the belt-tests page.
I'm an adult — do I need to be fit to start?
Not at all. Adult students begin exactly where they are and build up gradually; you don't need any experience, flexibility or current fitness level to take a first class. Just come in comfortable clothes and try it.
